Telekomunikation > Synphony

How does it work?

By installing the Synphony Client client application on their mobile phones, Synphony users to gain access to the world of audible content and services. Using 3G connection, the application communicates with a central server, run by the service operator. The server is the actual gateway between the World Wide Web and the Vocal Web Space created for Synphony users.

The Server

The Server is used to harvest and aggregate content, to interface with various existing Internet services and applications and to bring these into the world of vocal access and browsing.

The difference between visual and vocal access to information is fundamental. The reason for the difference lies deep in human psychology and cognitive abilities of the human mind. When we see a content rich web page, in a moment we grasp all the components, pictures, links and menus on that page. It is fast and intuitive. The process of transforming the GUI (Graphical User Interface) based world of information and entertainment into a VUI (Vocal User Interface) based space is intricate and complex. The server takes care of this transformation.

There are several types of activities one can carry out while browsing the World Wide Web. It can be “passive” browsing, i.e. reading headlines and articles on a news portal. It can be an interactive activity such as message exchange via e-mail or social network. It can be searching for an address of a restaurant. It can be just listening to streaming music.

For each of these web applications, a VUI counterpart should be built in order to enable robust and intuitive usage. Inphodrive has developed a unique VUI concept used to create these applications. Inphodrive's VUI is flexible, able to adapt its behavior to the changing driving environment.

The server’s second functionality is to reprocess the incoming textual content so that it could be reproduced by the speech synthesizer in an authentic and easy-to-listen way thus enhancing user experience, which is crucial for user satisfaction. Inphodrive has developed unique algorithms to carry out such reprocessing.

Finally, the server manages user profiles and personalizes the content sent to the user so that the user would receive information of interest first without even explicitly asking for it. The information can be personalized by user’s location, his previous content preferences, demographic profile or personal settings. Thus the driver is able to receive the desired content in fast and effective way.

Summing it up, the server builds a world of vocal web applications as counterparts of GUI based web applications and processes the content in order to ensure user satisfaction while using these applications.

The newly created vocal web is now easily browseable by the Client.

The Client

The Synphony Client is a Vocal Web browsing application. It is able to comprehend vocal input from the user and to deliver the content in audible form.

In the heart of the software running on the Client, lays a smart and intelligent module - the Inphodrive Dialog Engine (DE). The DE manipulates Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) engines in order carry out the actual vocal interaction with the user. At each dialog step, the DE receives a short scenario from the server as the basis for the upcoming interaction with the user. The DE is responsible to handle all out-of-order situations during the interaction in order to provide joyful and robust experience to the user.

In-car connectivity

The mobile phone of the user pairs with a Bluetooth handsfree device installed in the vehicle. The handsfree device allows delivering high-fidelity audible contents through the vehicle's audio system as well as receiving high quality voice input though in-vehicle microphone.
